CHECK THE PULSE - PAINTINGS I heard "painting is dead" a few times recently and this show gave me an opportunity to check its pulse. On a fundamental level, this body of work is more about painting itself than previous exhibitions. There is a conceptual arch here beginning with socially charged paintings of litter found in the street (Herba Inutilus Urbanus Volvens - Brims). While working on these images, the idea strayed away from pop cultural references and became mediations on luster or visual scintillation within the undulating forms of metallic surfaces. As color was introduced (and the actual references became less important) these paintings began to make me question how I should paint, and why (Herba Dark 1)? Creating the illusion of space is always fighting to control my work. Over time, that aspect became less important than the immediacy of the brushwork. As a result, the exhibition as a whole shows a transition in my personal understanding of painting. Working in the street, I came to understand that everyone wants the process revealed. It now feels honest to do so in my studio work. Maybe its revelation is part of a new zeitgeist looking for more transparency behind the scenes throughout society. The process and thinking are exposed while leaving content open to subjective interpretation. My intentions and philosophy are there, but I believe in the importance of unique perspective and the value of individual understanding. I want to thank all who came to CHECK THE PULSE and especially thank everyone who participated in the raffle. The big winner was John MacNamara, a long time supporter. I'm happy he won. The pulse was checked and found to be a little weak unfortunately. Even with all your support, my goal for the funds needed to make a project in Cuba possible did not materialize. There will be another opportunity down there someday in the future. Instead I will apply the funds from the raffle to an upcoming project in Malaga, Spain this May. CHECK
